He became a Major League Baseball umpire in 1998 and since then he's umpired the 2004 All-Star Game, the 2005 Division Series, the 2007 Division Series, and the 2008 American League Championship Series.
The highest point of Sam's professional career came in 2010 when he walked onto the field at the Fall Classic and umpired the World Series between the Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants.

Adkins participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Morehead State University's Learning Center where new computers were donated by Dataseam. MSU plays an integral part of the Dataseam program which uses coal severance money, appropriated by the General Assembly, to purchase computers for schools in coal-producing counties. The new computers at MSU will assist students who need additional help in their studies. This is the first lab of its kind. In addition, Dataseam is establishing a Scholars program where five students majoring in education – particularly in the science field – will receive scholarships.
