February, 2008 Majority Leader Rocky Adkins Honors Lawrence County Wrestling Team
Frankfort, KY: Majority Leader Rocky Adkins, (D-Sandy Hook), met with the Lawrence County Wrestling Team when they visited the state capitol in Frankfort, Kentucky last month.
Rep. Adkins hosted the team in his office, congratulating them on their hard work and great season. He then spent time explaining his duties as majority floor leader of the Kentucky House of Representatives.
"See that picture over on the wall?" asked Rep. Adkins pointing to a photograph hanging nearby of him dribbling a basketball. "That was taken when I played point guard for the Morehead State University Eagles when we went to the NCAA tournament. My job as forward was to control the tempo of the game, get the ball down the floor, and make sure my teammates were in position to handle the ball. That's a lot like what I do here in Frankfort. I control the House floor, call bills off the board, and make sure legislators are ready to talk about their legislation when it's their turn."
Rep. Adkins congratulated team members Zach Frazier, who captured Regional Championship honors in the 152 pound weight class, and Chris Kazee, who captured third place regional honors in the 189 pound weight class. Each team member received a citation for athletic achievement from Rep. Adkins which read:
The House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky hereby honors and commends (name of team member) for his phenomenal performance as a member of the Lawrence County High School Wrestling Team during the 2007-2008 season and upon visiting the Capitol in Frankfort, Kentucky, during the 2008 Regular Session of the Kentucky General Assembly. Inasmuch as {name of team member) has demonstrated phenomenal skill coupled with remarkable determination and perseverance in this worthwhile endeavor, the members of this august body are delighted to join Representative Rocky Adkins in applauding the stellar performance of this young athlete and in extending to him best wishes for continued landmarks of success. Done in Frankfort, Kentucky, this thirteenth day of February, in the year two thousand and eight.

Rep. Rocky Adkins Announces New Water Lines For Lawrence County Residents
Rep. Rocky Adkins,(D-Sandy Hook) announced last Thursday that residents in Elliott County will soon have clean drinking water, thanks to a $1.5 million grant he helped procure. The project will install more than 14 miles of water lines and serve 52 homes in the Brushy Creek, Little Brushy Creek and Hurricane Road areas in Elliott and Carter Counties and the Cherokee Gap area in Lawrence County.
Rep. Adkins, joined by residents and state officials, helped present the $1.5 million check to the Rattlesnake Ridge Water District last week.
The 52 residences targeted by the water line program had been identified by a study funded by Kentucky's Division of Abandoned Mine Lands as having been impacted by mining operations before 1982.

Rep. Adkins today announced a $7 million project that will bring water lines to residents in Carter, Elliott and Lawrence Counties.
A total of 177 homes in Lawrence County will receive full service water hookups from the new water lines. Project costs include $3.2 million for the water lines and $3.6 million for water tank upgrades, pump stations and water plant upgrades. These improvements will increase water supply from 1.6 million gallons a day to 3.1 million gallons a day throughout three counties. Rattlesnake Ridge Water District is the water service provider.
"One of my priorities as a legislator for 20 years has been to bring clean drinking water to our good people in the 99th District," said Rep. Adkins. "This project will provide a healthier standard of living for families and children and improve property values for area homeowners."
The project will be funded, in part, by $400,000 from Lawrence County coal severance funds, earmarked in the 2005 and 2006 state budgets by Rep. Adkins.
EPPC's Division of Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) will fund $1.05 million to provide full service water hookups for 54 residences in Lawrence and Elliott Counties and make a transmission line accessible to other residences along its route. Rep. Adkins was joined by Kentucky Environmenal and Public Protection Cabinet Secretary. "I'm a big supporter of Kentucky's AML because of the critical work they do in Eastern Kentucky," said Rep. Adkins.
A $1 million Community Development Block Grant, a $400,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant and rural development financial support are also part of the funding package. The project is expected to begin in early spring 2007 and be completed in late spring or early summer of 2008.
