Rep. Rocky Adkins presents check to Sandy Hook for sewer improvements
Latest funding brings total to more than $1 million for city’s sewer upgrades

Sandy Hook, KY: Rep. Rocky Adkins, (D-Sandy Hook), presented a check to represent the more than $1 million in funding to upgrade and improve the City of Sandy Hook’s sewer system. Rep. Adkins presented the check to city officials at the July 6th Sandy Hook City Council meeting.

“Since I was elected to represent this district in 1987, I have worked every budget session to increase the amount of funding to provide water and sewer lines in rural communities like Sandy Hook,” said Rep. Adkins. “It is imperative that we continue to expand our infrastructure in Elliott County and throughout Eastern Kentucky.”

Since 2005, three grants have been appropriated in the state budget and approved by the Kentucky General Assembly. In 2005, $479,444 was appropriated to allow the City of Sandy Hook to complete sewer line extension, purchase OSHA required maintenance equipment and a new sewer cleaning machine, and to upgrade piping at the new sewer plant.

In 2006, an additional $250,000 was approved to allow Sandy Hook to purchase spare pumps for lift stations, rehab sewers, and upgrade the City’s lift station at the Elliott County Nursing Home to allow for a new addition at the facility. In the last 2008 regular session an additional $250,000 was approved.

“In the last four years, more than $1 million in contracts have been let for sewer improvements in Elliott County,” said Rep. Adkins. “These upgrades and new lines translate into a better quality of life for our residents and greater economic potential for new and existing businesses.”

All of the funding comes from grants which are administered by the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority which is the agency responsible for water and sewer improvement projects throughout the state.

“These projects would not have happened without the extraordinary partnership between folks from the KIA and local government officials,” said Rep. Adkins. “It is exciting to work with these dedicated people who truly want to bring opportunity and progress to our region and I am proud to play a part in this success story.”

Rep. Adkins said that Senator Walter Blevins, (D-West Liberty), has also been instrumental in appropriating funding for local sewer projects in the state budget.
