It is my pleasure to stand before the Southern Legislative Conference Committee on Energy and Environment this morning to discuss an issue that is very timely and in the interest of all Americans. That issue is American Energy Security and American Energy Independence.

As state legislators, we share a major responsibility for creating and enacting laws. In order to do our jobs well, we must keep our eyes focused on the future, while never forgetting the past and the events that have shaped our country's progress.
